How the Cups to Grams Converter works
Pick an ingredient, type an amount and its unit, and see the weight in grams and ounces next to the volume in cups, tablespoons and teaspoons, or type grams to get cups. Answers come as amounts you can measure (3/4 cup + 1 tbsp) as well as decimals.
Each ingredient’s weight comes from USDA FoodData Central: 1 cup of all-purpose flour = 125 g, 1 cup of granulated sugar = 200 g, 1 cup of packed brown sugar = 220 g, 1 cup of butter = 227 g. Grams = cups × grams per cup, and cups = grams ÷ grams per cup.
Example: 1 1/2 cups of flour = 1.5 × 125 = 187.5 g. 100 g of flour = 100 ÷ 125 = 0.8 cup, which you measure as 3/4 cup + 1 tbsp.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a cup of flour?
About 125 g of all-purpose flour (USDA), 137 g of bread flour and 120 g of whole wheat flour per US cup. Flour scooped straight from the bag packs down and weighs more; spoon it into the cup and level it.
How many grams are in a cup of sugar?
200 g of granulated sugar, 220 g of packed brown sugar and 120 g of unsifted powdered sugar per US cup (USDA).
How many grams is a cup of butter?
227 g, which is 2 sticks (USDA). 1 tablespoon of butter is 14.2 g.
Why does a cup of flour weigh less than a cup of water?
Cups measure volume and grams measure weight. A cup of water weighs 237 g; flour is lighter for its size (125 g per cup) and honey heavier (339 g). That is why cups to grams needs the ingredient.
Does the cup size matter?
Yes. A US cup is 236.6 ml and a metric cup is 250 ml, so a metric cup of flour weighs about 132 g. Choose your cup size in Settings → Cups and spoons.
